The Bay of Campeche is surrounded by the Mexican states Campeche, Tabasco and Veracruz. During June and July the bay is one of the major breeding spots of Atlantic hurricanes. The city of Campeche was founded by Spanish conquistadores atop the pre-existing Mayan city of Can Pech.
