Tobolsk is a Russian city in western Siberia, at the confluence of the Irtysh and Tobol rivers. Founded in 1587, it became a major center of early Russian colonization in Siberia. In 1761, astronomer Chappe d'Auteroche successfully observed the transit of Venus there.
