Toshinori Maihara (b. 1942), an emeritus professor at Kyoto University, has been a leader in infrared astronomy in Japan. He is a codeveloper of Japan's largest new technology telescope, which is due to be installed at Kyoto University's Okayama Observatory. The name was suggested by Y. Yamada.
