Thomas Telford (1757-1834) was a Scottish civil engineer and famed builder of roads, canals, bridges, tunnels and harbors. The Ellesmere and Caledonian canals are amongst his most famous. His recommendations on, and subsequent building of, roads in northern Scotland reversed the declines following the Highland Clearances.
