Named for the Italian sculptor and painter Andrea del Verrocchio (1435–1488). Originally named Andrea di Cione, he adopted the name of his teacher, Giuliano Verrocchio, as his own. With Donatello {see planet  (6056)}, he was the leading sculptor in bronze of the Florentine Renaissance. His best-known work is the statue of Bartolomeo Colleoni in Venice. (M 26764) _ _.
