After a lectureship at Lund University, Jan Olof Stenflo (b. 1942) served as director of the Institute of Astronomy, ETH Zurich, during 1980-2006. His scientific work included contributions to the study of polarized light and solar magnetic fields. He supported the establishment of the Istituto Ricerche Solari Locarno.
