Regio Insubria is the old Celtic name of western Lombardia, a region of northern Italy known for its colorful countryside and blue lakes in which the Alps are reflected. Many historical astronomical observatories can be found there, including the Schiaparelli Observatory near Varese, where this minor planet was discovered.

Discovered on 22-4-2001 in Schiaparelli by Buzzi, L., Bellini, F.
