Named in memory of Carlos Chagas (1879–1934), Brazilian epidemiologist who first described the agent, vectors and clinical signs of a new disease, the American Trypanosomiasis. Also known as Chagas’ disease, this is an infection produced by the flagellate protozoan Trypanosoma Cruzi that is transmitted to humans by blood-sucking insects. It is endemic in most rural areas of Central and South America. (M 34354) _ _.
