Janis Ikaunieks (1912-1969), Latvian astronomer, studied the characteristics of the red giants. He founded the Latvian Astronomical Society and Starry Sky, the magazine of popular science. Ikaunieks was instrumental in founding the Baldone Astrophysical Observatory.
