Named in memory of Clayton Albert Smith (1934–1993), a leading expert on astrometry. Smith was known for his work on stellar catalogues and for improving the celestial coordinate system. He was director of the Yale-Columbia Southern Observatory (now the Dr. Carlos U. Cesco Station) in El Leoncito from 1968 to 1970 and director of the U.S. Naval Observatory’s Astrometry Department from 1992. (M 22497) _ _.
